International Photography Hall of Fame celebrates its 40th anniversary

200508bc_fassbenderwhtnt_1 To commemorate its 40th anniversary, the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum is offering a free gift to renewing and new members. For a $50 membership fee, you will receive a copy of "The Pictorial Artistry of Adolf Fassbender," a $49.50 value, along with all of the other benefits of IPHF membership.

The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum is the result of a project begun in 1965 by the Photographic Art and Science Foundation. Members of Professional Photographers of America originally created the foundation to promote photographic history by inducting historically significant photographers and inventors into a Photography Hall of Fame.

The IPHF is now located in the west wing of the museum complex called the Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space Museum at Omniplex in Oklahoma City. There IPHF houses more than 3,000 photographs in its permanent collection and displays in its galleries one of the world's largest collections of cameras, photographic equipment and memorabilia. For information, please visit www.iphf.org or call 405-424-4055.

Painting tips from Karen Sperling

Create custom palettes in Corel Painter IX

Creating custom palettes in Corel Painter IX is useful for choosing brushes without having to go into the Brush Selector menus.

Unfortunately, you can’t name the brushes in the custom palettes. So if you have several variants from one Brush Category, you will have a bunch of indistinguishable icons in the custom palette.

Instead of putting all the brushes on one custom palette, create a custom palette for each brush and name them individually.

Chicks Who Click: inspiring women to balance career, creativity and personal life

200508bc_chicksnordstrom Run, run, run. How fast life flies by! Can you stop for just a few minutes to consider how you're balancing your career, your creativity and your personal life?
Lori Nordstrom, Cr.Photog., of Winterset, Iowa, says slowing down enough to attend the last two PPA-sponsored Chicks Who Click retreats for women in photography was one of the best things she ever did (www.nordstromphoto.com). The underlying theme of the women-only conferences, she says, was finding ways to achieve balance in one's life, how to make family and friends a priority while running a successful business.

View from above: Look at what 8GB can do

A day's work condensed to 60 seconds

Commercial photographer Jack Reznicki uses his Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II, a PocketWizard MultiMAX Transceiver and a SanDisk 8GB CompactFlash card to record a photo shoot. Reznicki records two shots per minute, and uses iPhoto and iMovie to convert the images into a QuickTime movie. (2MB file)

PPA announces new online community, open to all

Professional Photographers of America (PPA) introduces www.OurPPA.com as a place where photographers can chat, ask questions, share ideas and post image galleries in a robust community that serves PPA members, as well as the photography community at large.

"We're very proud of this exciting new resource," comments PPA President Ann Monteith. "OurPPA.com was created in specific response to members' requests for an online community where they could interact and build a sense of oneness with other photographers. In the process of building the site, we recognized the greater benefit of making the online community available to everyone in the industry, not just PPA members. This means photographers will have instant access to more information, more creative ideas and more photographer friends than any other place online."
